The Emery Lady Spartans Volleyball team traveled to the 3A State Championship Tournament held on the campus of Utah Valley University today. They would play in two matches going 1-1, which would allow them to keep playing for a second day.

Emery entered the tournament 8-21 overall and 0-10 in region play which earned them the #13 seed in the playoffs.

In the first match of the day they would draw the Union Cougars (27-4 and 12-0) out of Region 14. The Cougars entered the tournament the #4 seed and would prove to be too much for the Spartans beating them in straight sets 25-10, 25-11 and 25-19. This loss would drop Emery to the consolation bracket which means that the best the Spartans can now finish is sixth place in the 3A classification.

Next up was the Delta Rabbits. The Spartans faced them once before this season at the Sevier Valley Tournament in Richfield on October 12, where they were defeated 2-0. This time around would be a different story. In a hard fought match that would go four sets the Spartans would get the best of the Rabbits 26-24, 23-25, 25-16 and 25-19.

That win will allow Emery to play on day two of the tournament. In one of the first matches of the day they will take on a familiar foe in the South Sevier Rams (16-15 and 4-6) out of Region 12. The #8 seeded Rams started out the day with a straight set loss to North Sanpete and then came back to defeat Providence Hall in straight sets.

Emery will face South Sevier tomorrow at 8 AM. Check back with Castle Country Radio for the latest updates as they become available.
