The Emery Lady Spartans improved to 1-1 on the young season with a dominating 72-24 victory over the Union Cougars Tuesday night in the home opener at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale.
Exploding out of the gate Emery opened a 23-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. The lopsided affair continued into the second half as the Lady Spartans outscored the Cougars 37-10 over the final two quarters.
Senior Kiri Cook led the way with 13 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting performance. Cook also made her mark on the glass, pulling down a team best six rebounds in the victory.
Fellow senior Hailey Allred contributed 11 points and sophomore Baylee Jacobson chipped in with 10. A total of 11 players scored at least one point.
Tuesday’s win comes following a season opening loss to the Cedar Red on Nov. 26. Despite the setback, the Lady Spartans battled back and forth with the defending 4A State Champions, who eventually pulled away for a 56-47 win.
The home opener is the first of three games in three days for Emery, with the second coming Wednesday evening on the road against Beaver. The Lady Spartans will wrap up the busy trek with another home contest Thursday evening against the Morgan Trojans.
