The Emery Spartans came up short for the first time this season in a 67-63 non-region loss to the Delta Rabbits Wednesday night in Delta.
Holding a comfortable 34-25 lead at the end of the first half, the Spartans were outscored in each of the final two quarters. Delta senior Derek Smith scored 17 of his game-high 38 points in the fourth quarter, completing the comeback back victory for the Rabbits.
Emery senior Brax Jensen finished with a team-best 30 points in the setback. Averaging 25.6 points per contest over the first three games of the season, Wednesday marked the second straight 30-plus scoring output for Jensen.
Senior Jordan Ekker chipped in with 14 points, 12 of which came from beyond the three-point line. Justin Rasmussen contributed eight and Kyler Wilstead ended with six.
Austin Topham joined Smith as the only other Rabbit to reach double-figures as he scored 11. Cade Smith scored six and Jamison Bishop added five.
Wednesday’s loss moves Emery’s overall record to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 on the road. The Spartans will take the rest of the week off before returning to the court on Monday with a home contest against Maeser Prep.
Monday’s game will be the first of a grueling four-games in five-day stretch for the Spartans. Next week’s slate also includes road games against Union and Green River, with a home tilt against Juab on Friday.
