Creekview students have been busy with archery club, reading and enjoying the various activities that the PTA is putting on. This week’s Carbon School District weekly update caught up with fifth grade teacher and archery club advisor, Mr. Jimmy Parker to talk about the fun that is taking place at the elementary school.
“We had quite the interest, we had over 60 kids try out for the team, we put on clinics for a few days. Regardless of their experience level of archery, we taught them for a few days and then we took a tryout and we took 33 kids this year and we’re super excited to start our first year at Creekview with archery,” said Mr. Parker. The school’s team is looking forward to competing this year against the other schools from the area, as well as performing at state level competitions.
Like every other school within the district Creekview is busily working on improving their reading levels and skills. “We have seen some wonderful gains this first quarter and going into the second quarter. We have leveling up opportunities through our reading program and we are well over 700 level ups with our students at Creekview which means that they’re reading quite a bit and we’re seeing some improvements in the classroom and just all across the board, it’s been a great thing to see,” stated Mr. Parker. The school’s educators have found that when students get excited about reading, they get excited about learning.
The PTA has established a Santa’s Workshop type business for students to do some Christmas shopping this year. “They are allowing kids the opportunity to learn what it’s like to give this time of year, and so what it is, basically, we’ve gone out and got little gifts that the students can get. The only cost for that is for them to write a heartfelt letter or card to a family member, that’s the cost for the toy or whatever it might be and then they will give that to a family member this season,” said Mr. Parker. The students are enjoying this opportunity to Christmas shop for family members and friends.
