The Carbon Lady Dinos won two tie-breaking coin flips to grab the No. 2 seed from Region 12 entering the 3A state tournament this Saturday.
After finishing 4-4 in region play, the Lady Dinos ended in a three-way tie with Canyon View and North Sanpete. Following the coin flips, Carbon was awarded the No. 2 seed, Canyon View No. 3 and North Sanpete No. 4.
“The tie-breaker is kind of funny considering it’s a coin toss,” said head coach Wade Williams Thursday on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports. “We lucked out and won that. I thought we were the second best team in the region, so we ended up getting that seed anyways.”
Carbon will now travel to St. George for the opening round to meet Region 10’s No. 3 seed Stansbury on Saturday at 10:00 am. Stansbury ended the region season in a three-way tie for first place at 6-2 with Grantsville and Tooele. Finishing on the short end of the tie-breaker coin flip, coach Williams knows Stansbury isn’t a typical No. 3 seed.
“They are a very good team in a very tough region,” said Williams. “We faced them last year in state and this year I feel that our odds are even better. If we come to play we should be able to get a win.”
If Carbon defeats Stansbury they will move on and face either Snow Canyon or Morgan in the second round on May 19. A loss will drop the Lady Dinos into an elimination contest against the loser of the Snow Canyon/Morgan game Saturday afternoon.
