Carbon High School senior Jordan Bianco converted a go-ahead free throw in the final seconds to lift the Lady Dinos past the Emery Lady Spartans 39-38 Thursday night at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale.
Locked in seesaw battle throughout, both teams held leads with major runs and different stages in the game. While Carbon held a 22-14 lead at the break, Emery captured the advantage heading into the fourth quarter. The final eight minutes proved to be a chess match that ultimately ended in Carbon’s favor.
Bianco posted a game-high 16 points, including three makes from beyond the three-point line, to lead Carbon to it’s first region win of the season. Abbie Saccomanno also reached double-figures with 12 points, two rebounds and two assists. Makenna Blanc and Brenna Tabone combined for nine points.
The win improves Carbon to 1-1 in region play and 10-5 overall. Entering the weekend the Lady Dinos remain No. 5 in the current RPI rankings.
The loss marks the second straight for the Lady Spartans, dropping their Region 12 record to 0-2 and overall record to 7-6.
Sophomore Tambrie Tuttle poured in a game high 15 points and snagged six rebounds to pace Emery. Kiri Cook finished with seven points, while Baylee Jacobson and Hailey Allred each scored six.
Carbon held a 38-33 lead in the final minutes of the game. Cook capped a 5-0 Emery run with a two-point basket to draw the game even at 38. Bianco responded with a drive to the basket that resulted in two free throws. After missing the first she gave her team the lead for good by sinking the second.
The Lady Dinos will next return to the court on Tuesday as they welcome in the No. 8 ranked San Juan Broncos, who hold a 7-3 record.
Emery will also continue the Region 12 portion of their schedule on Tuesday, with a road trip to Moab to face the Grand Red Devils.
