
The Green River Lady Pirates earned an opening round bye in the 1A State Championship Tournament taking place at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. The first opportunity they had to take the floor came on Wednesday morning against the Valley Buffalos. The second quarter turned out to be the Pirates undoing and they would go on to fall 48-32.
The two teams came out in the first quarter and it was Valley getting the five point advantage after one. In the second quarter, the Pirates were outscored 11-3 which allowed Valley to build their lead to 13 going into the half. The teams would play even in the third quarter and the Buffalos would outscore Green River by three in the final quarter to hold on to the 16 point lead.
Leading the way for Valley was Esther Cox with 14 points, Paige Harris added 11 and Jamie Hoyt had eight in the win. Next up for Valley is Water Canyon the No. 12 seed who upset the No. 5 seeded Piute Thunderbirds by 10 points 44-34.
For the Green River Pirates Talynn Lovato led the team with 12 points. Rilee Alvarado and Morgan Bastian each scored five while Sarah and Megan Vollmer each had three in the loss.
The Lady Pirates will now drop into the consolation braccket where they will face Piute. That contest takes place Thursday at 5:30.
