Teachers and students in the Carbon School District are nearing the end of their summer break but it’s been business as usual for Superintendent Steve Carlson as he prepares for another successful school year.
This has been the biggest year to fill vacant teacher positions, it generally runs in the lower twenties or so. “Right now we are scrambling to find a couple of teachers, a math teacher and English teacher and they are usually tough to find. So thirty teachers will be new to Carbon School District, spread throughout; probably every building has at least one or two and a couple of them; Castle Heights had four or five new teachers and so that is a lot of new teachers,” stated Carlson. Interested applicants are to contact the District office at 637-1732.
After years at Mont Harmon Middle School Jared Hardy has been assigned as the new Principal at Sally Mauro Elementary. “Several weeks ago after Ryan Maughn took a job in Emery County the committee was just really really happy with Jared and they were all very excited having him start as new Principal at Sally Mauro,” stated Carlson.Hardy has always had a great relationship with his students over the years at the middle school level and will strive to do the same at the elementary school level.
Last year chrome books were extended to the students at the fifth grade level to help with studies/lessons from teachers. Carlson added, “This year we’re having chrome books with fourth graders too and we’re trying to make it so the kids at their fingertips the newest technology. I just really would like to praise our school board because they have been very supportive, very excited and progressive about the chrome book issue.” The chrome books will be left at the school for classroom use only.
There may be a few teachers that will choose a new way of staying connected with their students and the parents as Carlson explains, “Its Remind 101 – lot times the teachers have it individually, coaches use it, sometimes the schools use it but it’s called Remind 101 and it’s a texting program, so ask your principals or your teacher about it and see what they know about it. Not everybody is doing it but it is a great program.”
The next big decision that will need to be made for the district is in regards to the legislative decision regarding SAGE testing not being required at the high school level. At this time Carbon School District has not had any discussions and/or made aby decisions but it is definitely on the agenda to be taken care of soon.
