The Emery Spartans were unable to match the explosive offense of the North Sanpete Hawks in a 38-6 loss Friday evening in Mount Pleasant.
Meeting for the third time in the last 13 games, the Spartans found themselves in an immediate hole as the North Sanpete scored on the second play of the game. Led by standout quarterback Landon Bowles, the Hawks continued to roll throughout.
Emery junior quarterback Ryker Jensen accumulated 80 yards through the air, including a 13-yard touchdown pass to senior Jax Madsen in the fourth quarter. The Spartans struggled to find consistency in the run game, ending with 28 yards on the ground.
Bowles followed up his seven touchdown game in week one with another dazzling performance as he completed 11-of-17 passes for 160 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. North Sanpete running back Trevin Morley gathered 87 yards on 20 carries for one touchdown on the ground.
Defensively the Spartans delivered a few bright spots, including an interception from senior safety Quintin Sorensen in the first half.
Now 0-2 Emery will prepare for its first home contest of the season on Friday against the American Leadership Academy Eagles. Entering on the opposite end of the spectrum, the Eagles boast a record of 2-0 following wins over Carbon and Ben Lomond.
