The Utah High School Activities Association released the first basketball RPI rankings of the year Monday afternoon.
South Sevier holds the top spot in the initial rankings with a record of 5-1. Richfield is currently No. 2, followed by Carbon at No. 3 Judge Memorial and Grantsville complete the first top five.
Every team in the 3A classification as suffered at least one loss heading into 2021. The four one-loss teams are currently ranked 1-through-4.
Coming in at No. 3 the Lady Dinos have jumped out to an 8-1 record. The top win for the team so far this season was a 31-point win over Union, who is currently No. 9. Carbon’s lone loss came at the hands of No. 5 Grantsville.
The Emery Lady Spartans are currently inside the top 10 at No. 7. Playing in just six games so far this season, Emery holds a record of 3-3. Playing a challenging schedule of upper classification teams, Emery’s lone loss to a 3A opponent was a seven point setback to No. 4 Judge Memorial.
Rankings will now be updated at the completion of each regular season game leading up to the final week of region play.
The RPI will be used for seeding come playoff time in February. The No. 12-19 teams will play first round games with teams ranked higher than 12 receiving a first round bye.
The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:
*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.
*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
