The Carbon County Commission met on Tuesday February 3rd at the county building for the first meeting of the month. The meeting could be attended in person or was also able to view on the counties You Tube page.

First on the agenda were two awards., Rose Barnes hand the Employee of the month award to David Brewer of the Carbon County Sherrif’s Office. Sergeant Brewer has been with the department for over 18 years.

Another award was handed out by Tina Henrie with the Office of Tourism. The Super Service Award was given to Dr. Tim Riley from USU Eastern’s Prehistoric Museum. They were recognized for all that they do in promoting the museum and the area.

One of the agenda items was a public hearing for Four Corners Mental Health to receive input from the community about the mental health and substance use disorder treatment needs of the county. Some members of the community spoke voiced concerns that some who go to Four Corners for rehabilitation are limited in their choices because there could be a program that they feel would works best for them but aren’t able to go because Four Corners isn’t affiliated with that particular one. Two members of the Felony Drug Court Program also spoke one going so far as to say that she would either be in jail or dead if it weren’t for the program. At the end Director Karen Dolan addressed the meeting saying, “Thank you for the input, we really are grateful to hear your feedback and my door is always open.” She closed by adding, “It isn’t perfect, it’s the system that we have and we are always trying to make improvements.”

The Commission was also addressed by members of the Castle Valley Livestock Show who were looking for a donation towards their upcoming show June 24-25. This show would be held as a practice for the Ferron Stock Show, where they show the animals and then they are auctioned off. The Show which would be held in Ferron has already received $3000 from Emery County and was looking for Carbon county to donate the same. This will be a “Jackpot” show which means all entry fees go back to the participants in the form of prizes, also the animals wouldn’t be auctioned off. After the presentation the commission approved the donation. Also the group had brought up the fact that they would like to hold the livestock show in Carbon county next year.

Also on the agenda the students of Carbon High were tasked with coming up with name for the fishpond at the fairgrounds. Mr. Anthony Cilli introduced Amy Thatcher, Sterling Scholar in Visual Arts and Maddie Criddle. Criddle’s suggestion of “Ye Olde Fishing Pond” was the winner. And Thatcher told the commission that she was currently working on a graphic for the pond and would be able to present it to them with in a couple weeks.

Also included were two motions for tax extensions and an opening of bids for a vehicle for the Economic Development Department. Both motions were approved and the purchase has been place on hold until Commissioner Hopes and Director Rita Chavira and go and inspect the vehicles.

One of the final agenda items dealt with the East Carbon Recreation Association. They approached the commission to discuss the purchase of a parcel that is owned by the county for the purpose of eventually building a community center. After discussion the county and the association agreed that once the association has funding in place to build the structure then they and the county would enter in to talks to sell the parcel. The county also acknowledged that they would like to get a proper value of the property.

The meeting wrapped up with a discussion of tourism funds and also a rundown of departmental totals for the county with the COVID funds that had been received. Clerk/ Auditor Seth Marsing added that if anyone has any question you can come in or call his office and they can give the information to the public.

The next scheduled meeting is set for Wednesday February 17th.
