The Carbon School District weekly update shines the spotlight on Carbon High School this week so Castle Country Radio had the opportunity to sit down with Carbon High School Principal Chris Winfree to talk about the construction that is taking place at the school.
“It’s been a very interesting process watching the construction going on at Carbon and we are looking very good to stay ahead of schedule. The crews that are working are working like crazy and they’ve been able to get themselves ahead of schedule. Right now, when you come to the high school, you’ll see the construction of the new wing of the building that is on schedule to be done before summer even starts,” said Principal Winfree. The crews are now looking at doing some projects inside the building which means that school officials may have to shift some things around to accommodate the workers.
One of those projects is to make some additions to the Fine Arts Department. “So we are going to be shifting the choir and the theatre classrooms around, adding some additional dressing rooms for the theatre, actually, adding some restrooms down in the Fine Arts wing, specifically, for the theatre students to use during performances and things like that, adjusting some things to the band. So big projects going on down there,” stated Principal Winfree. It may get a bit chaotic for the last few months of the school year with the commencement of indoor projects but it will be well worth it in the end.
“We are probably going to be moving our food services out of the cafeteria, possibly as early as April so the construction crew can get started on the work they need to do in the cafeteria. So, we’ve made some arrangements with the school district and making sure our food services are being taken care of. We’ll still be providing breakfast and lunch for students but we’re probably going to be doing it either out of Grand Canyon or in the gym,” explained Winfree. School officials will be sure to provide a temporary seating area for the students to enjoy their breakfast and/or lunch during the construction.
Overall, the construction is going very well and projects are getting done in a timely manner. “Initially, it was a two-year project and it may still get pushed back, so obviously no guarantees that everything will be done by the start of next school year. But this crew has been amazing, the work they are doing, the contractors, and architects. So they’re just flying through things right now, they’re tackling one project after another, after another. They feel pretty good that they can have almost all of it done and ready to go by the start of next school year,” stated Principal Winfree.
