
The Carbon Dino wrestling squad participated in the Divisional round of the 3A State Wrestling Tournament in Juab over the weekend. The Dinos finished in fifth place out of a total of nine schools, with 12 wrestlers qualifying for the state finals that will take place on February 19 at the Sevier Valley Center on the Snow College South Campus in Richfield.
It’s definitely been a up and down season for the Dinos. With the regular season over they can move into the state tournament with the chance to make some noise in the 3A ranks.
Wrestling in the 145 pound weight class, Bryce Judd sits at 17-5 on the year and ended the day with a fourth place finish. In his first match he defeated Deagan Davis of Union by a 14-3 decision. With his quarterfinal contest against Kyler Guynes he claimed another victory by decision with a score of 10-1. Moving into the semifinal round Judd would struggle losing to Chase Ingram of Juab by pin in 1:25, the loss would move him to the consolation bracket where he took the win by pinning Kelan Layton of Manti in 3:17. Judd would then fall in the third place match by decision to Kylan Taylor from North Sanpete 6-4.
Arie Kranendonk holds a season record of 16-9 in the 152 pound class, he would also claim fourth in his division. In his first round match against Everett Gilson of Morgan he claimed victory by pin in 5:10, moving into the quarterfinals Kranendonk pinned Jeter Perkins in 5:17. The semifinal round would see him face Logan Holdaway, from host school Juab, who would take the victory by pin. With the loss to Holdaway, Kranendonk would fall into the consolation round and would fight his way back into the third place match by defeating Everett Gilson of Morgan by an 11-2 decision. In his third place match-up Kranendonk lost by decision to Hyrum Morley of American Leadership Academy.
PJ Howa finished third in the 160 pound weight class winning his first two matches by pin. In his first match of the day, Howa claimed the win over Chase Harding of Union in a time of 1:27. In the quarterfinal round he took his opponent Tyler Winn of San Juan to the mat in a time of 2:25. The semifinals would see Howa take his first loss, a pin by Taylor Newton of Juab. Dropping into the consolation bracket he would knock out Lance Toone of Morgan by pin in 3:17. The third place match-up with Ryler Blackett of Juab would end in victory for Howa by pin in 5:28.
In the 220 pound class, Easton Horsley has been working hard all season for the Dinos and it didn’t stop as he came home with second place in the divisional round in his weight class. His first two matches both ended in pins as well. Defeating Smith Burton of American Leadership Academy in just 36 seconds, round two would not take him much longer pinning Stetsyn Turner of Union in 1:49. In the semifinals he took the decision from Jaxon Larsen of Morgan 7-4 which would put him in the first place match against Laramie Roberts of North Sanpete. Horsley was pinned in 2:42 finishing the tournament in second place.
