The Price Boys and Girls Club has got some big events coming up for their students and Club Director, Jessica Haro stopped by Castle Country Radio to talk about healthy life skills.
The club will be hosting a Sex Education Course for the teens. Students with their parent’s permission will be able to attend this course. “So this class, like you mentioned, is for 14 to 18 year olds. It is giving by an instructor that is certified by the state. We would give consent forms to the parents and this class really just focuses on healthy relationships, wanting to prevent pregnancy and STDs, and you know teach them about peer pressure and making decisions based off our values and what’s important to us,” said Haro. The course will be offered towards the end of the month. Parents who wish to know more details about this course can contact the Boys and Girls Club for more information.
In conjunction with National Nutrition Month, the club will share some healthy cooking classes with their students. “So a lot of our staff are going to be teaching some healthy cooking classes, both using a stovetop and without the stovetop and for our teens and juniors to learn to cook for themselves and have those life skills that they are going to take on to adulthood,” said Haro. Parents can expect to see their child bring home some delicious recipes to share with the family while learning some new healthy cooking skills.
The club has teamed up with a financial institution to teach the students some financial literacy. “This curriculum we are so excited about, it’s called Bonsai. It covers every topic from budgeting to if you want to pay-off your car loan to looking to moving out, you know what it realistically looks like to be able to afford that. So we’re going to do these classes are going to specific whether you are a teen or junior. Because we know junior and elementary age kid they don’t really need to worry about moving out yet. So, we’re going to make it very individualized per group,” explained Haro. The University Credit Union is hosting this event for the students and will be offering each student who opens a savings account with a $50.00 deposit.
The organization that caters to school-aged children to 18 years of age is already prepping for their summer program. “So I mean the warmer weather is making us think about summer already. So far we have already done outdoor activities with sledding and taking them snowshoeing and whatnot. For the summer, we are planning some big activities, we’re going to be going outside a lot, get them moving. Ideally, we’re wanting to plan activities where we can go down to Moab – go hiking, you know if we can, maybe some white-water rafting, so a lot of big things are in the works,” stated Haro.
