Carbon Caring for Kids has been helping kids in Carbon County for over four years now. The group takes in food donations and then puts kits together. These are for kids who go home on the weekends that may not be getting enough food, or any food, or families that are in need of extra help. The whole idea came from a couple of moms in the area that saw a need and decided to do something about it.
Marcy Loveless, one of the founders, posts weekly on the group’s Facebook page to let those interested in donating to the cause know what items are needed. The items are simple items that the kids can make themselves. Things like fruit cups, bags of cereal, applesauce and granola bars. They also accept things like the tuna fish and cracker kits and also single serve mac and cheese.
“We work with the counselors at different schools in our area and they assess the needs of each of their students”, Loveless explained. “If they see a need they will give us a number, so we don’t know any kids names, it’s all confidential.” The group feeds over 137 kids throughout Carbon and Emery Counties.
Once the items are gathered up it gets turned over to another group of volunteers who assemble the kits and get them ready for delivery. These groups consist of families, church or civic groups and businesses will get together and volunteer to help out.
Another group that makes this possible are the people who take the kits to the schools and drop them off. There is always some way that you can help.
With Spring Break coming up the end of March, the group will be looking for people who will be willing to donate whole kits. You would purchase everything that the students will need to last them for the time they are away from school. You are welcome to make as many kits as you would like.
