The Utah High School Activities Association released their 1A RPI rankings for the upcoming State Championship Tournament that starts on February 25 at home sites with the finals taking place March 4-6 at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. The Bryce Valley Mustangs from Tropic earned a 19-3 record this season and the No.1 overall ranking. The Pinnacle Panthers landed at No. 12 and Green River Pirates the No. 16 spot in the state.

Both teams have had their seasons affected by COVID wiping out what was to be the only meeting of the season between the two squads. It was a strange season to say the least but now it is win or go home.

The Pirates were quarantined for the first 16 days of February and then took to the court to play Tintic on February 19, Green River’s first game since January 25. Even with a Herculean effort from Rad Hughes with 38 points, the Pirates fell in their return to the floor by 18 points, 92-74.

Green River will get to go first when they face the No. 17 Milford Tigers on Thursday February 25 at home at 7 pm. The two teams actually met up in the consolation round of last years State Championships with Green River taking the 51-42 win and a fifth place state finish. With a win over Milford they would play the No. 1 seed Bryce Valley in Tropic on Saturday at 1 pm.

The Pinnacle Panthers haven’t stepped foot on the court in over a week after a 56-42 loss on the road at Wendover. By finishing in the top 13 they received a first round bye and will hit the floor on Saturday the 27 at 1 pm on the road in Junction when they face the No. 5 Piute Thunderbirds. A win there will earn them a trip to Richfield the following week to take part in the 1A State Championship Tournament.
