Helper Middle School is being highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update and Castle Country Radio was able to speak with Principal Robert Bradley about what is taking place at the school.

“We are continually excited that we are still able to meet in person, have school in person. From the beginning of the year, we haven’t had any times where we are not allowed to be in the building. Students are wearing their masks and school is progressing like it should and I think we are one of the luckiest districts around,” said Principal Bradley. It was been a great school year thus far with only months away till it ends in May.

Currently there are many activities that are going on at the school such as archery, basketball and Quiz Bowl. “Archery is going to be a local competition with judges coming down to watch the kids instead of having them go up north to a large big group. Basketball is still occurring; we appreciate the fans that show up and wear their masks and let us still compete. Quiz Bowl is actually happening virtually. I haven’t been able to see one of those competitions yet but the kids are having a lot of fun with it,” stated Principal Bradley. The archery competition is generally held up north where several different schools compete against one another but because of COVID that will not happen this year.

There have been no challenges with technology this year which has been key in having such a successful school year. “The District Technology Department in addition to our teachers have done an incredible job of experimenting, trying things out. There are certainly students that get quarantined for a period of time so they join in remotely and things work and kids catch up when they get back if they need to. But for the most part things are working and working well. I don’t anticipate virtual stuff going away anytime soon, we’re still going to have a slot for that I believe. But I’m excited that as things start to wrap up we get a normal school year as normal as can be,” said Principal Bradley.

There was a bond that was passed last year for some construction work/upgrades to be done to the school and that is set to begin next week. “As we start coming into next week, we’re going to be most likely removing the old Industrial Arts Building, that’s the small building that’s to the north of the school. In preparation for that we have had to make a small break room our of a storage room for the faculty and staff. We’ve turned our old faculty room into a library and we’re moving all the art students into the old library space so that now everyone is contained in the building,” explained Principal Bradley. This old Industrial Arts Buildings will be a place for storage of construction materials as the new portion of the building will be developed in the back of the school. Once the construction is completed the old Industrial Arts Building location will become a parking area.
