The Carbon Lady Dinos, coming off a huge overtime win last night against the Richfield Wildcats at the 3A State Basketball Championships, didn’t have a lot of down time. The Dinos then had to turn around and hit the floor to take on the Morgan Trojans Friday at 3 pm. The game was a back and forth battle all the way. At the end, Carbon’s state title hopes were dashed as the Trojans found a way to come up with the 59-50 win at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.

The Dinos have history with Morgan, going back to the Tournament last year, when Carbon defeated the Trojans 54-44 to take home third place in the State Championship Tournament. This game was for a chance to play in the state final and it was just not meant to be.

Carbon started out slowly allowing Morgan to claim a nine point lead at the end of the first quarter. When the buzzer sounded for halftime the Dinos had cut it to six. The third and fourth quarters were played tight but they would come close in the final moments. Morgan found a way to hang on and claim their spot in the State Championship Final round on Saturday.

Morgan was led by Morgan Birkeland with 14 points. Janel Blazzard dropped in 12 and also handed out 10 assists. Alexandria Trussell had 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the free throw line.

Freshman Madi Orth, who has played like a seasoned veteran this season, led the way for the Dinos with 13 points. She also added six rebounds and went 6-of-8 from the line. Senior Makenna Blanc added 12 and hit all of her four free throws. Sydney Orth, a junior, added 10 points and grabbed three rebounds.

The Lady Dinos will now face the Grantsville Cowboys Saturday for third place.

These two teams met up once this season on December 14, with the Cowboys coming up with the 52-41 win in Price at Carbon’s gym.

The game is scheduled to tip-off at 1 pm tomorrow.
