The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office has been busily working on revamping their heating/cooling and lighting systems at the jail which is a great thing. Sheriff Jeff Wood took time to speak over the telephone about what all the hustle and bustle is about at their facility.

“The IT Department and Maintenance for the county is led by Barry Horsely and he is a genius when comes to finding ways to save taxpayer dollars. He took on the jail in the last little while as a project. It started with small things like LED lighting, light switches in common areas that are automatic, they turn off, they turn on as you walk in and out,” explained Sheriff Wood. Horsley and his crew even found some insufficiencies in the cooling units on to top of the roof. These small changes have made a huge difference in monthly utility costs at the facility.

Due to the COVID pandemic last year the Carbon County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Demolition Derby was cancelled. However, this year it’s a go and organizers couldn’t be more excited to bring the community a great show.  “We are planning to have that. It’s going to be the first Saturday in August this year. We will be getting together as a group and starting the planning process. We actually feel like we’re a little bit behind just because of the uncertainty early on this year but it will take us all summer to get that planned. We’re planning on having the biggest, baddest show ever,” stated Sheriff Wood. The event organizers have set a goal to get 60 cars this year and they already know that there are cars being built around the area.

The Sheriff couldn’t finish his interview without mentioning some safety precautions to take while out in the backcountry, “Still have an unprecedented avalanche risk in our area with all the light amount of snow early on, then all of the snow that we’ve gotten in the last weeks. Just be careful out in the backcountry and those areas that look like there safe are actually just as dangerous as anywhere else so just be careful.”
