This week’s Carbon School District weekly update shines a light on the Castle Valley Center. Principal Amy Bell stopped by Castle Country Radio to share some information on what is taking place at the school.

The school developed a Community Post Office inside the school to help students understand the concept of mail. “Our school is very concerned with developing functional life skills. A couple of months ago we targeted learning how to work the mail but also with that is learning to write letters and say kind words; that’s one of our other school focuses is using nice words and good words to communicate. We have developed a mail system in our school. We purchased mailboxes so every classroom has its own mailbox,” said Principal Bell. Each student is assigned their own mailing address where they can receive mail from other students. The students will then take their letters to the Community Post Office to be mailed.

Students have had the opportunity to receive some mail from outside the school as well. “We’ve had a couple of classes in the district who have also written letters or written notes, cards for our kids. We’re hoping to expand that it’s been such a success we’re trying to figure out how we can continue this. So we’re now weekly delivering mail and it’s just been great. A lot of the teachers have just embraced it and we’ll create something with their class for all of the other classes so we’ll get a class delivery that goes through the mail system – it’s been really wonderful,” stated Principal Bell. They also have a student that plays the role of Post Master for the entire school where he sorts and delivers the mail.

The school just begin a lesson on Safety and Signs that they are eager to teach the students about the various signs located throughout the community. “We’re really focusing on community signs and safety. So recognizing what a lot of the signs that they would see out in the community exit, enter, you know which bathrooms are male and female, and where they’re located. Things like that to help protect them but also access the community,” said Principal Bell. The students are also learning how to cross the street safely by practicing at the school. School officials are hoping for nice weather when students return from spring break so that they can take the students out for real life scenarios.
