The Carbon School District weekly update shines the spotlight on Carbon High School this week so Castle Country Radio had the opportunity to sit down with Carbon High School Principal Chris Winfree to talk about masks, registration and graduation.

Although the state has lifted the mask mandate it does not include schools at this time. “Just as a kind of a way of a reminder I guess for everyone, we realize that out in the community when you go to stores and things like that most likely you’re not wearing masks anymore, depending on the stores. But in schools, we are still requiring masks to be over the mouth, over the nose, just like we’ve been doing all along throughout the year. That’s direct from the governor – the governor’s office has said that masks will stay in schools through June 15 I believe, so for us at least till the end of the school year,” stated Principal Winfree. Each individual on school property or school bus is required to wear a mask until the end of the school year which the last day of school is on May 26.

There is about six weeks left in the school year but it’s already time to register for the 2021-2022 school year. The school recently had the incoming freshman from Mont Harmon and Helper Middles Schools in for a tour and registration. “They were divided into groups and they were able to go meet with groups of teachers in classrooms to hear about all the different things that Carbon offers. I think they understand somewhat of some of the electives we have but we have so many different programs with in our CTE Pathways. They were able to learn about the honors and AP programs, college current enrollment classes, the different options even within P.E. and fine arts and different things like that. So it was a big success,” explained Principal Winfree. Carbon High Students will begin the registration process for next year in a week or so.

School officials are planning to host a high school graduation ceremony this year. “Right now, we’re actually looking at a couple of different options. We’ve sent out a survey to seniors to ask them what they would like. We’re looking at the possibility of a more formal traditional graduation, maybe at the BDAC with limited numbers. A formal graduation at Carbon may be in the gym again with limited numbers or possible an outdoor graduation on the football field, or something similar like we had last year with the drive-thru graduation. We’re just excited we get to actually have graduation and that we have options to choose from,” stated Principal Winfree. Further details of how graduation will be conducted this year will come as soon as the school narrows down its plan.
