The Carbon High Theatre Department will be hosting an event entitled A Night of Theatre on Monday, May 10 at 7:00 pm at the Carbon High School Auditorium. Director, Steve Pay stopped by Castle Country Radio to talk about the presentation.
The theatre students will be performing their one-act play that they performed at the Region Competition where they placed second. “The name of the show is called Shootout at Shadow Mountain and it’s a melodrama, and its about an hour long. It is totally student-run and student-directed. They did the set, they did the costumes, they did the props, they did everything and just took it from ground level zero up to second place on their own,” stated Mr. Pay. The instructor was very impressed with the way the students took the lead and ran with it.
Other acts that will take place will be musical numbers from previous shows that the school has presented. Mr. Pay worked closely with a colleague from Brigham Young University to create a mashup of musical numbers from each of the shows. “I said I want to mashup with our musical Newsies kind of as bookends at the beginning and the end, and in between it I gave him a list of our musicals we’ve done over the past. He pulled songs from Music Man, from Joseph, from Crazy for You, Beauty and the Beast, and he threw a little song in from Wicked which we obviously haven’t done and then he closed it again with Newsies. So, it’s about a seven and half minute mashup of those songs,” explained Mr. Pay. The group of students are currently working on choreography for the mash-up and are looking forward to performing in front of an audience since they have not been on stage since March of last year due to the COVID pandemic.
“It’s free admission. We will accept donations at the door. But you can just come on in and enjoy. We really just want to give people an opportunity to come and be entertained. I think people are so tired of being stuck at home, that we thought what better way with us going to a low COVID rate here in Carbon, that we can say lets’ do something that the people can come bring their kids to and their families to and just sit and have a good hour or so of fun theatre,” said Mr. Pay.
