Wyatt Falk displayed complete dominance on the pitcher’s mound as the Helper Merchants defeated Ridgeline 2-0 Tuesday evening to advance to the semifinals of the Utah American Legion State Tournament.
Falk delivered a complete game gem, striking out nine batters and allowing just two hits in seven innings. His command of the strike zone throughout the game kept No. 5 Ridgeline off balance in each frame.
The Helper offense gathered just enough run support to compliment the outstanding pitching performance. Jordan Fossat recorded a double and scored one of the team’s two runs. Kade Dimick also produced at the plate as he logged one RBI.
Tuesday’s outcome places Helper just three wins away from a state championship as only three teams remain in the 16 team playoff.
The tournament will continue with just one game on Wednesday night as Helper and Pleasant Grove will meet in Kearns at 7:00 p.m.. The winner will advance to the title game Thursday against Herriman.
Herriman remains the last unbeaten team in the tournament, meaning either Helper or Pleasant Grove will need to earn two wins on Thursday. The first championship game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.. If necessary the two teams would meet again at 7:00.
