The Green River Pirate baseball season started on the road against the Wayne Badgers. Wayne would strike first in the third inning and the Pirates could never get their offense going losing the contest 6-0.

Coming off a 1-18 season last year, the Pirates return just two seniors on a squad of just nine players.

The Badgers claimed the No. 3 spot in the 1A State Tournament last year ending with a 15-10 record.

Jay Medoza managed the only hit for the Pirates coming in the seventh inning. Wayne’s combination of Jake Batty and Ryker Peterson kept Green River batters in check giving up just one hit and combining for 15 strikeouts.

On the mound the Pirates used a trio of pitchers. Jay Mendoza got the start going three and giving up two runs on three hits and struck out five. Jordan Anderson went two giving up three earned and struck out two and Cristian Venzor finished out the game, giving up one earned and struck out two.

The Pirates will hold their home opener on Friday when they welcome Altamont to town.  The first pitch is set for 3 p.m..
