The Price City Youth Council is a great way for teens to get involved in local politics. It allows them to see what it takes to run a government and what they can do for the citizens. One of the great things that they work on is a lot of fun community service projects. Their latest one focuses on Childhood Cancer Awareness.
Pierce Bryner and Landrie Anderson joined us to discuss the youth council and the event they are working on.
Bryner has been on the youth council for about a year and a half and started by talking about how they come up with projects.
“The youth plan their own activities, some of them are just for fun like block parties. I think what the Mayor likes to see is the most is the community service. And that’s what I like to do so, last week we painted curbs on main street because the governor was coming.”
Bryner then talked about how you become a member of the council noting that their term only lasts one year.
” There is a nomination process in the spring, we are allowed to bring any committee members that we want to help with any projects they are interested in.”
Landrie Anderson, a two term member, talked about the upcoming project that she has been working on.
” This year we have a new system, where there is a committee out of the council and each committee is assigned a month. So I decided that we would do my project for September because September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.”
The event will begin with the painting of rocks. People are welcome to come down to Price City Hall from 4-6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and paint the rocks with sayings, pictures or memories.
Then the rocks will be placed on the Price River Walkway on September 18 for the Memorial Walk.
“They’ll be placed at the Price River Walkway, in the form of a memorial where people can come and walk and view and be together during what can be a hard time for some”, Anderson stated.
