The Lady Dinos tennis season came to an end over the weekend at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. Carbon was well represented sending three single players and two doubles teams and by Saturday afternoon the Dinos came home with a State Champion, Lieke Verwiej, a sophomore, who took the top spot in third singles.

Verwiej had to work her way through three different opponents. In the first round she defeated Hallie Henrie of North Sanpete 6-2 and 6-2. Round two’s challenger was Eliza Juggi of Morgan, she would take the match in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Verwiej would take on Rachel Strelow, the No.1 seed, a senior from Juan Diego in the final. Needing just two sets the sophomore won the  state title 6-3 and 6-4.

Lindsay Snow was the Dinos representative in first singles. Snow had made it through the regular season a perfect 8-0 and in the first round faced Valeria Rico of Juan Diego. Rico ,a senior, lost to Snow in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Moving into the next round, Katelyn Steel from Morgan faced off with Snow and Steel handed her her first loss of the season 6-0 and 6-1. Steele would go on to take the first singles title.

Second singles player Lizzy Blackburn, like Snow, had entered the tournament a perfect 8-0. In the first round she faced Kendra Sandberg from Ben Lomond. After two sets Blackburn took the win 6-1 and 6-0. Moving into round two Tennyson Seethaler of Rowland Hall-St. Marks claimed the victory 6-1 and 6-0.

In first doubles, the team of Kaydance Scovill and Laurie Parry entered the bracket as a two seed and faced No. 3 seed Megan Grant and Clare Perkins of Maeser Prep with the duo from Carbon taking a loss 3-6, 6-1 and 6-1.

Alyssa Ellis and Ella Anderson, Carbon’s second doubles team,  faced off with Jet Russell and Maya Grajek from South Summit.  Ellis and Anderson grabbed the win 6-0 and 6-1. In round two the team from Judge Memorial Justine Nicholson and Audrey Selfridge took the win from the Dinos 6-1 and 6-2.

Morgan High School finished in the top spot with 19 points. Grantsville finished in second with 18, Carbon and Maeser Prep both tied with nine and Rowland Hall-St. Marks finished in the fifth spot.
