The Division of Wildlife Resources will be hosting a Mule Deer Watch on November 13 and this is limited to 30 participants. Castle Country Radio spoke over the telephone with Conservation Outreach Manager, Aaron Bott to discuss the details about this event.

“We’re going to be hosting our annual Mule Deer Watching event out at Nash Wash, which is pretty far east on I-70 so you’re just about 40 miles east of Green River. You can register for this event on at https://www.eventbrite.com/ and it’s a great wildlife watching event. We host this in the evening and it will take place on November 13,” explained Bott. Participants who attend this free event are urged to bring binoculars, cameras, warm jackets and water. The Nash Wash WMA is approximately 12 miles down a groomed dirt road and a four-wheel drive vehicle is not necessary. This event is weather dependent; rain or snow can make the road impassable so when you do register for the event, please keep an eye on your email for event updates.

The Nash Wash WMA is a parcel of state-owned property managed for the benefit of wildlife. It lies near the southern tip of the South Book Cliffs, an area known for large and plentiful mule deer. “Out at Nash Wash we’ve got some pretty high expectations, our biologists over that area has said that he has seen great does, great bucks as well. This is an area that we manage to help wildlife so we kind of created this little sanctuary out in the desert and typically it gets a lot of attention from the local Mule Deer population. So we’re crossing our fingers that we’ll have a great viewing event,” stated Bott.  November is a great time to observe mule deer because of the rut, a period when the deer are mating. During this time, deer are less concerned with human presence. Participants will have a chance to watch and learn about mule deer behavior. There is also a possibility that participants will get to see turkeys, chukars or even a black bear.
