This week’s Carbon School District update shines a spotlight on Bruin Point Elementary where Principal Connie Todachinnie took time to speak over the telephone about the school’s penny drive and museum field trip.
“Last year we had a penny drive and this year we had another one, what it is, is the kids collect change. So check your couches, underneath your chairs, in the laundry, you know ask dad to empty his pockets, that type of thing. The kids do really, really, well every year and this year they earned about $1,300.00,” said Principal Todachinnie. The school held a competition between classes to see who could gather the most change and the class who won got a special activity to enjoy. This year’s winner was the first-grade class who got to have a silly string war with their teachers.
All the funds earned through the penny drive stay at the school to help fund various activities. “We’re going to be getting new t-shirts this year and earlier we had a contest, they worked in groups and we had a group that won and their logo is going to go on the new school t-shirts and that money will help pay for the school t-shirts,” said Principal Todachinnie. The funds will also help with treats during the school’s holiday events and assist with expenditures for the end of the school year field day activities.
The students are looking forward to a field trip scheduled for this month to the USU-Eastern Prehistoric Museum. The day after the visit Dr. Tim Riley will visit the students at Bruin Point to share with them all the work that he does at the museum. This event has opened up the opportunity to possibly re-open the East Carbon Museum with the help of Bruin Point students. “What’s really exciting is that we had Mr. Craig Royce come in a couple of days ago and talk to me about the East Carbon Museum and teaming up with Dr. Riley. Right now, this is all in the planning stages, they did get permission from our city council and our mayor. But we’re trying, he’s trying to reboot the East Carbon Museum and we’re going to help,” stated Principal Todachinnie. Again, this is in the early planning stages so there will be more news shared as it becomes available.
