Teams from the Wasatch Front as well as the Uintah Basin and eastern Utah will take part in the Helper City Holiday Hoops Classic brought to you by USU Eastern starting on Tuesday and going through Thursday evening at the BDAC on the USU Eastern campus.
American Heritage High School, Summit Academy and Grand will bring their varsity and junior varsity teams. Union and Green River are bringing their varsity, junior varsity and freshman/ sophomore teams and locally Pinnacle will send their junior varsity team.
The event was supposed to be held at Helper Middle School organizer Curtis Condie, a teacher at the school and basketball coach at Summit Academy said, but it’s not quite ready.
“The plan was to be at Helper Middle School, but unfortunately with the construction we’re still not ready to host an event of this magnitude.”
Condie also talked about the fact that this could be a great opportunity for USU Eastern to do some recruiting as well.
“We’re going to have 163 potential students on their campus, on top of their parents, we have six schools that are coming to this event, four that you would say that are definitely within USU Eastern’s footprint, but then you’ve got two others that are coming from the outside that are going,’ Hey this isn’t too bad.’ ”
The difference between this tournament and others is that all the teams in your program can play. Most tournaments are only for the program’s varsity team, but this event all three teams (varsity, junior varsity and freshman/sophomore) are welcome to play and will be matched up with other teams.
Condie also thinks that this could be something that he would like to see continue to grow.
“We’re thinking about building this, making it an every year thing. Now it’s going to be small this year. With Pinnacle involved, now we could do varsity games (not this year) at the BDAC, junior varsity games at Pinnacle and freshman/sophomores at Helper Middle.”
The cost is just $6 for adults and $4 for students per day and you will get five games each day.
