On Thursday the first RPI rankings of the year were released by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA). The ranking is really just a mathematical equation that takes several different factors into account and they are then continuously updated throughout the season and will be used for seeding in the state championship tournament in February. The Pinnacle Panthers landed in the No. 17 spot while the Green River Pirates sit in the No. 23 spot.
The Panthers are sitting at 4-4 this season and are coming off a 63-28 victory over Dugway. Cole Barton has been a catalyst for Pinnacle averaging 14 points per game this season. They will be on the road taking on Diamond Ranch Academy on Jan. 4 and will be back home on Jan. 8 to face Wendover game time is set for 5:30.
The Green River Pirates have struggled to a 1-7 record and have lost their last four games. They are taking part in the Helper City Hoops Classic Tuesday-Thursday of this week and will open up play against Grand. They will make their way back to Green River on Jan. 19 to face Wayne.
The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:
*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.
*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.
*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
