Each week during the school year a representative from the Carbon County School District comes in to speak with Castle Country Radio about the latest news and happenings taking place within the district. Superintendent Mika Salas stopped by Castle Country Radio to kick off the new year by discussing construction and extend thank-yous.

Construction at Carbon High School is plugging along and they recently used the time during the Christmas break to give Grand Canyon Hall a new look.  “Grand Canyon Hall was cleaned up and furniture was starting to be placed in Grand Canyon. We’re still waiting on some finished details like some lighting fixtures and things that with COVID delays shipping and manufacturing and things. We’ve just been having to be patient through some of that but those are coming together,” said Superintendent Salas. The construction is coming along very nicely and a lot of progress was made over the Christmas Break.

Much of the progress was putting the finishing touches on the new Fine Arts wing which contractors hope to have open very soon. “Also, we are getting some occupancy permits for our, and Fire Marshal inspection tasks that we have to check off our list to take occupancy of our new Fine Arts wing and so we are super excited about all of that. We should be seeing teachers moving in and students moving into those new areas this week and it’s just super exciting,” stated Superintendent Salas. The district plans on hosting an Open House when construction is completed so that the community can come to visit the newly constructed and renovated school.

Helper Middle School has been under construction as well. “Helper’s construction is also coming along very nicely. It’s a little bit different where much of the construction now is in a separate place from where the kids are. So it has progressed really quickly because they don’t have to work around the students like they have had to at Carbon High. So that construction is coming along nicely,” explained Superintendent Salas. Even though there have been some delays with materials because of COVID the school is planning on a Spring Break move-in date to occupy the new facility. They too plan to host an Open House to show off the construction and renovations to the public later in the year.

Our area has received a lot of snow lately, although school has been out during much of that time officials still have to provide maintenance work around the local schools. “Just a huge shout out to our maintenance people. We have some fantastic people who work behind the scenes always and never ask for credit but they do a fantastic job. Our custodial staff works the whole break and they kept everything shoveled and using snowblowers, and de-iced and salted and everything all break to make it safe for people to come back and get snow out of the way. So I just want to say thank you so much to our maintenance crew and custodial staffs,” said Superintendent Salas.
