Ryan Baker ran for 212 yards and two touchdowns as the Juan Diego Soarin’ Eagles blasted through the Emery Spartans 38-7 in the 3A North regular season finale Friday night in Draper, UT.

Needing a win to force a three-way tie for second place, the Spartans started strong but allowed three long touchdowns at crucial stages in the game. The loss dips Emery to 2-3 in league play, making them the four seed for the upcoming state tournament.

Zac Jorgensen led the Emery offense by completing eight of 18 passes for 88 yards and touchdown. Jorgensen also threw one interception on a fourth down attempt early in the contest.

With 1:08 remaining in the opening quarter Juan Diego broke a scoreless tie as Baker scored on a 76-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-one. The Soarin’ Eagles added another touchdown on their next drive as quarterback Zach Hoffman scored on 3rd-and-goal from the 22. Baker put the game out of reach on the following possession with an 86-yard touchdown run.

Trailing 38-0 in the final minute of the game the Spartans avoided the shutout as Jorgensen connected with Tel Gardner on a 10-yard touchdown pass. As a team Emery was held to 129 yards on the ground and 88 yards through the air.

Friday’s loss brings an end to the regular season for the Spartans and sets up a first round match-up with the 3A South champion Juab Wasps in the opening round of the state tournament on Oct. 28. Despite jumping out to a 2-1 start in league play, Emery suffered back-to-back losses in the final two games of the regular season.

While most of the 3A classification will play their final regular season games on Wednesday, the Spartans will have a bye to prepare for the state tournament. Juab and Emery have two common opponents this season in Manti and Delta. Emery split with the two squads, while Juab won both by a combined score of 64-10.
