Future beekeepers interested in finding out what it takes to be a beekeeper have the opportunity to learn at the Beginner Beekeeping Class on Saturday, March 5 at 9:00 am at the Ponderosa Grill in Huntington. Instructor, Tj Gordon stopped by Castle Country Radio to share all the details.

“My start up beekeeping was a birthday present to myself when I turned 25. I bought by first colony, and got my first colony on my birthday then. I didn’t just get one I actually ended up getting around 21 colonies, with the ability to grow much bigger than that,” said Gordon. This started out as a hobby seven years ago and has develop into a passion for Gordon.

There are many benefits in producing honey, it can be an antidepressant and help to heal wounds. “So local honey something even the Vet prescribed to one of my horses earlier on. We had a horse that actually came in with a pretty good cut on his leg and he was reading an article said that the sugars, microbes, probiotics in local honey actually help with the healing process and you can barely see that scar now that I administered to it,” stated Gordon.

There will be such fun information shared at the class that its sure to get everyone excited about beekeeping. “To begin with you’re going to understand that types of bees in your colony. So you’ll learn what a queen is, you’ll learn what a drone is, and what a worker bee is. You’ll learn to see the different stages of the growing bee from egg to larva to pupa to hatchling. You’ll differentiate your comb, you deep sizes of boxes, your production colonies. Then you’ll get into what you should buy beginning wise,” said Gordon. There is a small fee to attend the class, individuals will pay $10.00 and couples will pay $15.00 and children under the age of 12 are free.
