The Emery Spartans got things started on Tuesday with a season opening win over Manti 10-1 in Castle Dale. On Friday, they welcomed in the North Sanpete Hawks. Playing at Cheddar Field as they await their new home field’s completion, they took the fight to the Hawks, putting up 11 runs in five innings and earning the 11-1 win.

Emery has played their first two home games at Cheddar while waiting for the new baseball field to be ready for them to play on, which should be around the end of this month.

Oakley Alton needed just 64 pitches in the contest to put away North Sanpete, throwing 43 for strikes. Alton allowed one earned run on just two hits, striking out eight and walking just one.

Things got rolling offensively for the Spartans in the bottom of the second when Emery would put up five runs, three from the bat of Gannon Ward who went 3-3. Ward would also earn an inside the park homerun in the fourth.

Wade Stilson would add three more RBI’s on three hits. Jace Mangum went 2-3 driving in two runs and Tyler Stilson went 2-4 adding an RBI.

For North Sanpete, their lone run came courtesy of a homerun off the bat of Angel Navarrete.

The game with North Sanpete was the last one for the month of March that will be played at home. The Spartans will now begin an eight game road trip taking them to Timpview on Monday, they will then head south for tournament play starting Friday Mar. 18.

The next time the Spartans will play at home it should be on the new field at Emery High School on April 1, as they welcome Canyon View to town for a region match-up.
