The 3A soccer RPI was released last week by the Utah High School Activities Association. The RPI is a mathematical equation that ranks teams by the strength of their schedule and is based on three different parameters: the teams winning percentage , their opponents winning percentage and their opponents opponents winning percentage.  The equation gives each team a percentage and then those numbers are used to rank each team throughout the season. With the playoffs coming up in late April, teams can get an idea as to whom they may be playing when the time comes.

In the most updated rankings Layton Christian Academy holds the top spot followed by Juab, Ogden, Real Salt Lake Academy and Judge Memorial round out the top five.  Grand is the highest ranked Region 12 member on the list at No. 8. Emery enters the list at 10 and Carbon at No. 15.

Emery has earned a 4-3 overall record and they are 3-1 in region play. Their last match was a 2-2 tie that ended in a 3-2 shootout victory over Grand. Up next for the Spartans is a home match with the Uintah Utes from 5A. The Utes will bring in a 4-2 record and a 2-2 region mark. Game time is set for 4 p.m..

Carbon enters at No. 15 with a 5-5 overall mark, which includes a 4-1 region record. The last time they were on the field the Dinos were handed a 2-1 loss by Summit Academy. Carbon will welcome  in the Emery Spartans on April 14. This will be the final time the two teams will meet in the regular season, on March 18, Carbon traveled to Castle Dale to face the Spartans with Emery getting the better of that match-up 3-0.

The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:

*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.

*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.

*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
