With almost one month left until the playoffs start, the Utah High School Activities Association released their RPI rankings last week.  The RPI is a mathematical equation that ranks teams by the strength of their schedule and is based on three different parameters: the teams winning percentage , their opponents winning percentage and their opponents opponents winning percentage.  The equation gives each team a percentage and then those numbers are used to rank each team throughout the season. With the playoffs coming up in early May, teams can get an idea as to whom they may be playing when the time comes.

Carbon claims the top spot in the latest rankings followed by Grantsville. South Summit, Emery and Morgan round out the top 5.

Carbon sits at 11-3 overall and 2-0 in region play. Their last outing was a 15-0 win over Emery on April 1. They will be back on the field on Tuesday as they welcome in Region 12 member Canyon View. Game time is set for 3:30 at the Carbon County Fairgrounds Softball Complex.

The Lady Spartans were in Payson last Saturday playing four games in a one day tournament. Finishing the day with a 3-1 record, Emery is taking a much needed rest for Spring Break. They will head back to the field on Friday April 15 when they will make the trip to Price to face the Dinos. The first pitch will be thrown out at 3:30.

The RPI standings will now be updated following every contest throughout the remainder of the season. In a field consisting of 18 teams, the top 16 will qualify for the state playoffs, which begin the final week of October.

The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:

*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.

*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.

*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
