The Eastern Prehistoric Museum is excited to be hosting an event called Prehistory Week – Pottery on the Plateau. The week-long activities will feature all things having to do with the Colorado Plateau. Museum Director, Dr. Tim Riley stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss all the details.

“As you said, we’ve decided to do a week-long thing. Prehistory Week is something that museum has done quite some time. Utah’s Archeology and Historic Preservation Month which is the month of May, grew out of that at least in part. We’re choosing to do one week but we’re trying to do something every day for that week,” explained Dr. Riley. The activities that are planned for the week range from tours, to lectures and even some hands-on experiences.

Things kick off on Monday, May 2 at 5:00 pm with an activity called Modern Ceramics that will take place in Helper at Royster Ceramics. “So Monday, May 2 we’re going to be up in Helper focused around Kathleen Royster’s studio. She’s a modern, great ceramicist who has a shop right there in downtown Helper and makes incredibly, intricate dinnerware and other ceramic vessels. So we’ll be able to visit with her shop and watch how she does modern ceramics,” stated Dr. Riley. Also taking place during the event will be an opportunity to go on a walking tour of Helper to hear the history of the buildings.

The schedule for the week is as follows:

Tuesday, May 3                 12 pm           Clay sourcing field trip

Wednesday, May 4            12 pm          Hands on activity

5 pm          USU Eastern Studio Tour

Thursday, May 5                 7 pm          Ceramic Identification

Friday, May 6                      5 pm          School drawing contest awards

Saturday, May 7                 All Day          Family Day – Free Museum Admission

Monday, May 9                 12 pm          Ceramic Cataloging

7 pm          Virtual Lecture: Culture in Clay

If you would like a more detailed schedule of events individuals are urged to visit the museum’s social media pages. “There will be a schedule on our website. We will make events on our Facebook page for each of these, if you’re on Facebook, I recognize not everybody is. Then we’ll also be sharing it with our various friends in media partners around the community through a press release. Basically, there is something that’s going to be going on every day and if you check-in at the Prehistoric Museum Facebook page or the web page, you’ll be able to see what is happening that day,” stated Dr. Riley. If you have any other questions about the Prehistory Week activities contact the museum at (435) 613-5060.
