Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend Carvel “Cobb” Johnson, age 89, passed away on April 20, 2022 at the Good Life Senior Living Center in Price.
Cobb was born December 19, 1932 in Elsinor, Utah to Arthur W. and Hulda Christensen Johnson. In 1936 the family moved from Elsinor to Mt. Pleasant. At the age of 5 he had an accident to his left eye and it had to be removed in a hospital in Salt Lake City. In order to be close to the doctor in Salt Lake he stayed with his aunt Lydia for several months. Cobb later moved with his family to Price in 1938 where he has resided ever since. He graduated from Carbon High School in 1951 and later attended Carbon College while working at Mendenhall Auto Parts and Repair.
Cobb married the love of his life Bonnie L. Dal Ponte on May 28, 1956 and they celebrated their 60th anniversary cruising through the Panama Canal in 2016 with the Carbon County Cruisers. Cobb and Bonnie received the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony by Reverend Thomas J. Meersman in 1959 and Cobb received the Holy Sacrament of Baptism on January 6, 2022 by Reverend Arokia Dass David.
He started COBB’s Motor in 1970 and was very successful with the help of Bonnie and his brother Doug. In 1976 Price City asked him to work for them to take over the city shop and purchasing of equipment. He worked for Price City for 22 years with his last position as Public Works Director. He received an award from the Governor for co-founding with Bryan Matsuda the juvenile work program for wayward juveniles that needed a venue to work off their fines and restitution to the courts. Cobb was a sports enthusiast and played basketball for Carbon College in the 1950’s. He also loved to hunt, fish, bowl, golf, party at the Elks where he was a lifetime member and entertainment chair for five years. He loved to go on cruises with Carbon County Cruisers and camping with friends. Cobb played golf and helped design the back nine holes at the Carbon Country Club where he was a past president. He was instrumental in creating the golf getaway in January’s to get away from the winter weather in Carbon County. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
