Derek Canterberry earned a state championship in the shot put as the Emery High School track and field teams wrapped up the season Friday and Saturday at the 3A State Championship meet at Brigham Young University in Provo.
The Richfield Wildcats walked away with the overall team championship on the boy’s side of the track as they scored 100 points. Morgan ended in a close second with 90 points, followed by Union, Delta and Emery in fifth.
Canterberry gathered 18 of the team’s 43 points as he finished first in the shot put and second in the discus. The first and second place performances ended as Emery’s top individual finishes for the state meet.
Battling with teammate and fellow senior Maddox Christman, Canterberry’s championship toss ended at 48.5 feet. Morgan junior Shaun Moore finished in second at 47 feet, followed by Christman in third at 45.5 feet.
Both Canterberry and Christman would give a stellar effort in the discus later in the day. Falling shy of North Sanpete’s Gavin Lund, Canterberry ended in second, while Christman ended seventh.
Jess Christiansen scored points in three events for the Spartans, participating in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meters. His top finish came in the 800 and 3200 meters with a fourth-place finish in both events. He also gathered a sixth-place nod in the 1600.
The Emery Lady Spartans completed the season finale meet with nine points, placing them 14th out of the 18 competing schools.
Whitley Christensen and Daicee Ungerman scored those nine points in the high jump. Christensen finished fourth overall with a jump just under five feet. Ungerman was right behind in fifth place after jumping 4-09.
