Day two of the CJ Smuin Memorial Tournament concluded in exciting fashion as the Helper Legion baseball team dominated Montrose, 10-0. Wyatt Falk was the man of the hour after posting an 11-strikeout no-hitter in five innings. Helper rode the arm of Falk and the bat of Chet Anderson, who finished the game with five RBIs, to their second win of the tournament and will face St. George Friday night at 8:00 pm.
Wyatt Falk was given the start on the mound and did not disappoint. Falk put on a show as he struck out 11 batters in five innings. While he did find himself in some early trouble after a few walks and hit-by-pitches, Falk was able to settle down and deliver when under pressure. Falk needed 111 pitches to get the job done, due to multiple deep counts to Montrose batters.
Both Montrose and Helper struggled early in the game to find sparks offensively until the bottom of the third when Peyton Molinar recorded the first hit of the game that sparked a seven-run inning.
Helper was quick to take advantage of the early baserunners as Connor Bradley would load the bases on a bunt single. Chett Anderson drove in Wilson and Molinar on a two-run double to left center. Rylan Hart would step up and hit a single into shallow center that allowed Bradley to score from third and Anderson to advance. Ridge Nelson hit a triple over the Montrose left fielder’s head to score Anderson and Hart to give Helper a 5-0 lead. Jacob Vasquez would hit a sacrifice fly to score Michael Vigil (pinch-runner for Nelson) from third to put Helper up six runs. Quade Henrie scored the seventh Helper run on a passed ball.
Helper would not score again until the bottom of the fifth when Chet Anderson hit a triple to deep center field that would score the game-winning runs as Helper walked off with a mercy-rule victory.
Chet Anderson finished the game 2-4 with a double, triple, and five RBIs. Peyton Molinar finished 2-3 with two singles and two runs scored. Ridge Nelson went 1-3 with a two-run triple.
Helper played well defensively as they finished with 15 putouts and committed just one error that came early in the top of the first inning.
Helper will take the field again tonight, Friday, at 8:00pm as they take on St. George, who is also 2-0 so far in the tournament. The winner of tonight’s game will play in the tournament championship game that will take place tomorrow afternoon, time TBA.
