
Over the weekend the Helper American Legion 19U squad finished up play in the CJ Smuin Memorial Tournament in Helper. Finding wins in their first two contests, Helper faced a team from St. George on Friday and Salem Hills on Saturday. The game with St. George started out with a big first inning and would see Helper hold on for a 7-2 win. The final game Saturday was a little closer seeing Helper come away with a 5-4 victory.
Helper has only dropped one game this season, an 8-7 nail biter with Jerome at the RBI Tournament in Idaho, but has been flawless since posting a 7-1 record.
In the game Friday with St. George, Helper got out to a big 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first that was capped off by a Dallen O’Neil double to center that drove in Wyatt Falk, Peyton Molinar and Quade Henrie.
O’Neil had a four RBI performance on a 2-3 day at the plate. Henrie had an RBI on a 2-4 day scoring two runs as well.
Jordan Fossat started the game on the mound earning the win going six innings, giving up two earned on three hits and struck out nine. O’Neil came in to go one inning getting the save.
In the contest on Saturday Helper faced the legion team from Salem Hills.
The game started out quietly with no one getting on the board until Salem Hills broke the ice putting up a single run in the top of the fourth. In the bottom half of the inning Helper would answer back when Ridge Nelson would advance to third on a passed ball and then on the third pitch to Henrie, a balk was called giving Nelson the run, tying the score at one.
With the score 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh Helper went to work. With the bases loaded, Rylan Hart gets hit by a pitch forcing O’Neil in. Two batters later with two outs, Camden Wilson would score on a passed ball and Falk stepped up to the plate sending a ground ball to center, scoring Chet Anderson and tying the game at four sending it to extra innings.
Helper held Salem Hills scoreless in the top of the eighth and coming up in the bottom of the inning with the bases loaded Ridge Nelson slapped a single to first base bringing Molinar home ending the game, 5-4.
Nelson was the hero of the game going 2-4 with the one RBI and scored a run. Anderson went 2-3 with a run scored and Hart was 2-4 with an RBI in the win.
On the mound, Camden Wilson got the start and the win, going 6.2 with three earned on five hits and struck out two. O’Neil went 1.1 and surrendered two and struck out two as well.
Helper will next be on the field Tuesday in Manti for a double-header at 4 & 6 p.m..
