The USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum Director, Dr. Tim Riley was happy to come into Castle Radio to discuss new operating hours, establishing a visitor information center and ways to volunteer.
The Prehistoric Museum now offers later hours for folks to have the opportunity to visit in the evenings. “As you mentioned our summer hours, they’re now actually year-around hours but we’re open till 7:00 pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and so we would love for you guys to come in for your late evening. We’re open the rest of the days of the week, seven days a week, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, so you could come in on a Sunday, a hot Sunday afternoon, feel free to come in to enjoy the museum,” said Dr. Riley. Admission rates are $6.00 for adults, $5.00 seniors and $3.00 children.
The museum has been busily working on establishing a visitor information center and development of the center is coming together quite nicely. “We starting to make some actually physical headway. In the past we talked about some of the improvements with electrical and internet. But we actually got the main panels installed, they were installed last week and are up on the walls. Brochure racks coming in shortly, there’s some hold up with manufacturing, not just with us but with things all over the country, so those should be in in the next couple of weeks. We’re likely going to having an opening in the second half of July,” said Dr. Riley. This is a collaboration between Price City, Carbon County Tourism Office and USU Eastern who are all creating together the Visitor Information Center.
There are always opportunities to volunteer at the museum. “We have lots of volunteer opportunities. Sometimes they’re going into the field with the archeologist, like me or our paleontologist like Dr. Josh Lively, who actually going out next week. But there’s also opportunities in the museum, some these might be working with collections or in lab spaces either removing fossils from the stone or helping put broken pottery pieces together,” said Dr. Riley. This would be a fun and rewarding experience for any interested individuals.
