Pinnacle Canyon Academy has been taking sixth grade students to Washington DC during the month of September for the past few years so that they can visit the history classes.

Elementary Principal, Mr. S. explains, “In fifth grade students always study U.S. History and as a school we decided it’s always much better to have the students experience something rather than reading about it. So we put together a fundraiser, so every Spring – it’s called our Wild West Carnival which happens in March and then those proceeds go towards sending those students to Washington DC the following Fall.”

The Wild West Carnival is held in March each year and features games, various activities and barbeque dinner for the entire family at a reasonable cost. The biggest money maker at the event is the silent auction which features elaborate gift baskets put together by parents and staff with items that have been donated by families and local businesses.

The annual trip to Washington is a once in a life time experience for both students and their chaperone which is usually a parent. “We even have some parents that go on the trip that it’s the first time that they’ve been out of Utah or first time on an airplane. It’s an excellent experience, I’ve gone as a parent with my own kids and it’s something that we will remember forever,” stated Mr. S.

Mr. S brought to the studio two of his students that went on the annual trip this year to talk about their experience. “My personal favorite part was going inside the tomb of George Washington because every day the schools that go to Washington they put flowers inside the grave every day and say his prayer that he said,” said Jayson Miller, sixth grader.

Addison Christensen, fellow sixth grader talked about her favorite part of the trip, “I would have to say going to the White House and seeing how big it was and we also went to the beach, it was fun.” Both students agreed that their visit to Arlington Cemetery was a neat experience too.
