It was a slow start offensively for the 17u Merchants team on Wednesday afternoon at Carbon High School. Helper has been hosting the American Legion State tournament since Monday entering the game on Wednesday with a record of 1-1. Both teams started out slow but after seven innings the Trappers Red team walked away with the 5-3 victory.

The Trappers got on the board first in the bottom of the second. The Merchants would tie it up in the top of the third inning and the Trappers came storming back in the bottom half of the inning adding two more and taking the lead, 3-1.

The Trappers added another run in the bottom of the fourth and in the top of the fifth Helper cut the lead to one with one swing of the bat by Tyrus Madsen, who sent a hard ground ball to second base driving in Peyton Molinar and Stockton Kennedy, putting the score at 4-3 and that was as close as they would get. The Trappers add one more run in the bottom of the sixth and took the three run win.

Stockton Kennedy and Tyrus Madsen were the only Merchants players to register hits in the contest. Madsen earned two RBI’s in the game as well.

Logan Madrigal started on the bump for the Merchants going 3 2/3 innings giving up four runs (three earned) with four strikeouts. Madsen came in to finish off the game going 2 1/3 surrendering one earned run on three hits and struck out one.

The season comes to an end for the 17u team, but that doesn’t mean the season is over. Some of the players will now begin play in the 19u tournament that will begin on Saturday in Logan. The Helper team, who holds the No. 1 seed will begin play against the team from Bear River. The two will meet up at 5:00 at Ridgeline High School.
