The Carbon School District weekly update features Bruin Point Elementary in East Carbon. Principal Dina Wise took time to come into the Castle Country Radio Station to highlight some activities her students have been participating in.

Wise explains the new Rising Raptors After-School Program, “We’re servicing 33 students through that program after-school. They eat dinner with us and they go to different clubs and activities. We have a Pottery Club, a Lego Robotics, they are learning how to play the ukuleles.” A parent night has also been held to allow students the opportunity to show off their work.

Originally the after-school program targeted fun, hands-on activities but the school decided to incorporate some academic assistance for the students. “Our focus wasn’t so much interventions and academics; but recently, we started plugging that into the program. The teachers are just raving about how much better their students are doing on their spelling, quizzes and just the writing that they are doing and how that is really boosting those students who sometimes their parents work, they don’t have a lot of help at home and so the Rising Raptors Program is boosting that,” stated Wise.

The students recently presented a Town Hall Concert which is a musical concert about the importance of prevention. “We have through the State Office of Education we have a curriculum named Prevention Dimension and Steve James has written a bunch of songs that go along with the curriculum to prevent violence and drug abuse. Him and his wife, Lisa came down and performed a Town Hall Concert with our students which is very interactive,” explained Wise. The evening’s event was turned into a very family friendly night.

A school wide activity was held on Veteran’s Day where students did a small report on a Veteran in their life and in turn shared details on poster board for the school to see. Local Veterans were invited to participate in the small ceremony held at the school. The colors of the flag were presented by the local Boy Scouts and the Rising Raptors sang the National Anthem.

The Lions Club-Price Chapter was on hand for the Veteran’s Ceremony so they hosted for the first time at the school a Constitution Spelling Bee. This competition is where participating students try to answer questions about the Constitution of the United States. Wise explains more, “We did our first inaugural Constitution Bee and we had three ladies that won that. We had Loyal Martinez took first place, Jersey Wayman took second place and Anabella LaFontaine took third place in that. So that was really fun to bring that in with our Veteran’s Day program.” Winners received cash prizes ranging from $10.00 to $50.00.
