The Boys & Girls Club is spending Christmas Break doing renovations to the building to better accommodate the students. Club Coordinator, Quakee Tabone stopped by Castle Country Radio to talk about all the details.
“We’re really excited, we’re sad we have to close, but we want to make sure that when we’re open the kids are able to use the bathroom, and have water, and power. So we’re closing while they do some renovations to our kitchen and our bathroom. We’ve had lots of people in and out measuring things and getting things ready. It’s really going to be a crunch-time for them to change up our entire kitchen. We’re getting new cabinetry; we’re going to knock down a non-low barring wall and put up an island. We’ll have a little bit more kitchen space to help them learn some healthy habits, and work on food prep, and we want to start offering our teens food handlers permits as well,” stated Tabone. The bathrooms will be getting a much-needed face-lift to better accommodate the students that attend the Boys & Girls Club. Students will be able to return to the newly renovated club on Jan. 3.
Once students return to the club there will be different interactions between the fifth graders and the older students. “So this is our second year doing this, but we actually get to move our fifth graders that are going to go to middle school next year, we get to move them up to our teen center. I know a lot of parents get sad about this, they don’t want their babies to grow up, and go to middle school but we want to help them be prepared as they possibly can. Kind of know they’re way around by the time they get to middle school in the Fall,” explained Tabone. This allows for the younger students to get familiar with the older students’ study habits so that middle school is not so overwhelming for them next year.
The Boys & Girls Club is looking for individuals to come assist with the teen program at the club. “We really have a fun environment to work in. We get to plan the activities that we run. So right now, we’re looking specifically for Teen Staff and what the means is a staff to work with our Teen Group, and that’s middle school to high school aged. We need at least two, more are welcomed, but you do have to be 21 years of age to work with the teens,” said Tabone.
