Although we are just finishing up with holiday celebrations the USU Extension is gearing up for some fun events that will help with spring time gardening. Extension Assistant Professor, Steven Price stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss all the details about these upcoming events.

The Castle Country Gardens & Landscapes for Beginners begins on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 6:00 pm. “So this will be the first one, we have them monthly, and it’s always going to be on a Wednesday evenings. So we have five coming up throughout the year and the first one we’re going to be covering Seed Starting. January is really the time to be thinking about it, especially so you can get your seeds ordered, know what you are going to be planting the following spring,” said Price. If you need help to figure out what you plan on planting this is a good course to receive assistance from. There are differed topics discussed monthly and those courses will be Fruit Trees in February, Insect Friends & Foes in March, Food Scaping in April and Water Wise Landscapes in May. The cost to attend these courses is $5.00 per class or $20.00 for the series.

Next on the agenda will be Crop School to be held on Wednesday, Feb. 8. “So this is an annual event, probably one of larger annual events that we have as an extension in our area. This is just a really good time – we feed you, we have some interesting speakers come in, we usually have some vendors there that you can talk to about different ag products, services, Ag insurance. Just different stuff that you might want to consider for your farm or ranch,” said Price. Further details on the event will be shared as it becomes available.

Another great event that is taking place and registration closes on Jan. 6 is the Master Gardner’s Program. This course is being offered online from Jan. 10 through Feb. 23 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. “We start off with the basics you know botany, soil science, kind of those, maybe you know they’re a little bit of a dry topic. But really, we set up the foundation so when later we talk about fruit and vegetables, or diseases, or small fruits, or turf grass, – you have the foundation to know some of the basic science and make some better choices when comes to the best management practices for the different things we encounter in our landscapes and our gardens,” said Price. Again, the registration closes on Jan 6 and the cost to participate is $200.00.
