The Carbon School District update took time to shine a spotlight on Sally Mauro Elementary this week and Castle Country Radio was able to speak with Special Education Teacher, Kristi Tweddell and Second Grade Teacher, Shelly Gravett about how things are going at the school.
Students are buckling down now that the holidays are over. “This is kind of our go-to time; we have from January to March where we don’t have a lot of breaks. So the kids, we have a lot of learning time that’s happening and the kids are starting to get into it,” said Mrs. Tweddell. The school has seen some very cold temperatures this last week so they have had to come up with different ideas to entertain the children on recess breaks.
The Special Education students keep busy with all their school work with help from teachers like Mrs. Tweddell. She assists students in grades third, fourth and fifth grade. “You know I specialize in their education. All of my kids are IEP students, and so they all have Individualize Education Plan, and we just kind of work on what’s appropriate for their level, where they’re at and what they’re doing. So that’s all kind of specialized but my students also push out and they do some of their sciences, and specials and activities like that out in the gen ed population or the gen ed classes,” stated Mrs. Tweddell. The students enjoy their time outside of their classroom with other students and teachers.
Things have been going really well in second grade this year so far, as Mrs. Gravett explains, “We have so much fun in second grade, we like I said try to do lots of rewards, and help them focus on good behavior so they can earn those parties and earn those rewards. We also do lots of fun field trips, we go to the Rock Shop, we go downtown Helper, and go to the Fire Station, the museum, we take them bowling – that’s all usually at the end of the year but the kids have a blast with that.” There is a lot of discovery activities that take place during second grade.
The second grade have also been working hard on their citizenship so that they can be awarded a fun activity in class. “In my class we do like the paper chain that you see at Christmas where people count down but we’re counting up. So we go from one corner to the other corner of our classroom for them to earn a party. They’ve earned five parties in my class this year, they have been super awesome and we’re going on our sixth party,” said Mrs. Gravett. One party that the students got to enjoy was a board game day where students got to play any board game of their choice.
