Tuesday night in Green River the Pinnacle Panthers came to town to face the Pirates. Games between these two are always exciting but this game was something extra special as the fans in attendance were treated to not one, but two overtime periods, and unfortunately for the home crowd it was Pinnacle who came away with the win 69-62.

The Panthers are enjoying their best season in recent memory with a 16-6 overall record and a 6-1 region mark. With one game left on their schedule, this Friday with Monticello, that will have big title implications. Before the Green River game the Panthers took care of Whitehorse, 63-58.

Green River is 9-14 overall and the contest with Pinnacle was their final region game giving them a 2-6 mark. They will have a non-conference game Thursday when DeBuque comes to town. Last Saturday, Whitehorse was in Green River and handed the Pirates a 66-55 loss.

Tuesday night was really a story of quarters, as the first three were dominated by Green River, who outscored the Panthers in both in the first half, with the Pirates taking a 28-18 lead into the locker room.

Coming out in the third Pinnacle matched Green River point for point as the Pirates still maintained a 10 point advantage going into the fourth, which was when Pinnacle would make their move.

In the fourth, Pinnacle was a team possessed, knowing that they needed 10 to get even, they got that and then matched up scoring 25 and tying up the game at 54 and moving it into overtime.

This first overtime period was played even making it necessary to go to double overtime, and Pinnacle would own that outscoring Green River 9-2 and earning a 69-62 win.

For the Panthers, Cole Barton lead all scorers with 32 points adding 14 rebounds, Jonathan Kessler continued his terrific season, with 25 point 11 rebounds and seven assists, and Ryker Howell had six points and two boards in the Pinnacle win.

For Green River, Joe Vollmer put up 15 with Luis Hernandez adding 14 and Hoyt Hurst had 10.

Pinnacle will face Monticello on Friday with a share of the Region 23 title on the line. Game time is set for 7 p.m., in the Panthers gym.

Green River welcomes DeBuque (8-9, 4-4) to town Thursday, tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m..

Monday, the Utah High School Activities Association will release their final RPI rankings and the brackets for the 1A State Championships, which will begin on Feb.25 at home sites, and conclude Mar. 1-4 at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.
