Helper Middle School is being highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update and Castle Country Radio was able to speak about the school’s archery team, E-sports team and about the upcoming theatre production.

This year’s archery team is preparing for a charity archery shoot to help prep them for their upcoming state competition in March.  “So it’s a charity shoot for St. Jude’s Hospital, so what we’re going to do is we’re going to actually do it at the school and we’re going to open it up so if parents want to come see. But essentially with them on their own home turf, it’s a good starter, like a good warm-up for the state competition which is actually in a couple of weeks,” said Advisor, Marcos Navarro. The state competition will be held in Ogden, with the national tournament held in Utah again this year.

The team has been practicing very hard before and after school to get ready for their state competition. “If you look at the state, I don’t think Carbon County teams are outside of their division, outside of top five, maybe top six or seven. Carbon County is an archery county in the state, we’re always showing up and like doing good,” said Mr. Navarro.  He anticipates that the school will do very well at both the charity competition and at state, making it so they will compete at the national tournament in Sandy, Utah.

Another competitive school team that’s in its first year is the E-sport Team who have been participating in competitions too. “Actually, so in fourth quarter, date to be announced, Pinnacle Academy is actually hosting a competition. They actually hosted one this past term, Helper Middle School showed up and got first place in the Mario Cart tournament, and we got fourth in the Smash Brothers, which is not a bad showing for the first year of having this program,” stated Mr. Navarro. He’s looking forward to the team gaining experience and becoming more competitive as the program grows.

The school is currently hosting rehearsals for the upcoming production of the Jungle Book which will be shown at the Rio Theatre at 6:00 pm. “Our show is on Mar. 23rd, 24th and 25th. There are two shows on the 25th one at 1:00 pm and one at 6:00 pm. Adults are $4.00, children 3 to 18 are $3.00 and 2 and under are free,” said Leah Sweeney. There are two different casts that will be performing the production so the public is encouraged to see the play more than once. There will be awesome technical elements to the play that will amaze the audience.
